Excursion to Lassithi - Mythology Park

Our first stop on the scenic route towards Central Crete is the Monastery of "Kera Kardiotissa". It is dedicated to Virgin Mary, run by nuns and is locally also known as Little Lourdes, with people making pilgrimages to pray for relief from their sins.

Then the route continues southwards and you will reach the Plateau of Lassithi, which may have been the crater of an ancient volcano. In the past it used to number nearly ten thousand windmills of which so many have still remained.

The Plateau is a wonderful cool and fertile area where you will meet small villages and a very warm welcome. A visit to the Greek Mythology Park gives you a wonderful idea of the myths and civilization of the Ancient Greeks.

The lunch break will be in one of the local villages in Lassithi. While following the route around the Plateau, you will also pay a short visit to a traditional pottery factory to see an ancient ceramic art, which completes today more than 8.000 years of history! Last but not least, leaving the Lassithi Plateau you will enjoy the views down to this Pediada Plain which are truly magnificent.
