Discover the charm and history of one of Budapest’s most fascinating neighborhoods—the Palace Quarter (Palota Negyed, in the 8th district)—on this immersive evening tour. This area, with its magnificent old palaces, tells the story of Hungary from the 1800s to the present day. As you explore, you’ll enjoy delicious food and drinks, all while soaking in the laid-back atmosphere and stunning architecture of a district now home to several universities.
Grazing and Strolling Among Golden Age Palaces
This tour is especially close to our hearts, as it’s designed to showcase our very own neighborhood! For the past ten years, we’ve operated our wine tasting cellar, The Tasting Table, right in the heart of the Palace District. Over time, we’ve fallen deeply in love with this remarkable area.
The neighborhood’s appeal is easy to see—breathtaking architecture, a vibrant student presence, and a rich, ever-present historical backdrop. It’s also filled with cool cafés, art galleries, and unique shops. The Palace Quarter is a favorite location for international film shoots, often standing in for other European cities. It’s not uncommon to see a movie being filmed here on any given week!
A Culinary and Cultural Journey
We’ll begin our evening at The Tasting Table, where our sommelier will introduce you to a selection of Hungarian wines, paired with a platter of local cheeses and charcuterie. From there, we’ll visit five more venues in the district, sampling a variety of dishes and drinks:
- Freshly baked treats from a family-run bakery dating back to 1870
- A shot of pálinka in a lively courtyard bar
- Gulyás soup and appetizers at a cozy neighborhood bistro
- A sweet finale at a historic coffeehouse
Walking Through History
Between tastings, we’ll stroll through the elegant streets nestled between the inner and outer ring roads. Highlights include the gardens of the National Museum, where aristocrats once built their palatial homes during Budapest’s golden age, and café-lined streets with a more Bohemian flair.
As always, our tours blend culinary delights with rich storytelling. You’ll hear about the buildings and people that shaped this neighborhood, including:
- Hungary’s first parliament
- The dramatic events of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, especially the siege of the Hungarian Radio building
- The influence of the Italian community in the area
- Hidden courtyards and interiors not open to the public
