Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial Day Trip from Vienna
By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen Concentration Camp had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the German-occupied part of Europe. Some 200,000 people are thought to have been imprisoned at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945, and about half of them lost their lives. Become acquainted with the history of Mauthausen Memorial during the bus ride from Vienna.
At the Memorial, meet a specially trained educator for a 2-hour guided tour of the complex in English. Non-English speakers may tour the Memorial independently using an audio guide (available in 11 languages).
Taking the route that was taken by the prisoners will enable you to engage critically with the perspectives of the perpetrators, and to reflect on how the concentration camp was viewed by the wider population during the Nazi era. Confronting the perspectives of victims, perpetrators and local people is an essential feature of the tour. Then spend around an hour visiting the permanent exhibition of Mauthausen Museum before returning to Vienna. A late lunch (not included) can be had at an Austrian restaurant en-route to Vienna.
